Anti Convulsants

Anticonvulsants drugs medication used to control (prevent) seizures (convulsions) or stop an ongoing series of seizures. Some anticonvulsants are indicated for other medical uses. Some hydantoins, such as phenytoin, are also used as skeletal muscle relaxants and antineuralgics in the treatment of neurogenic pain. Some anticonvulsants and antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) are used in psychiatry for the treatment of bipolar disorders (manic-depression). There are a large number of anticonvulsant drugs today including: Lamotrigine (Lamictal) - used for treating certain types of seizures, Primidon (Mysoline) - used to treat or prevent epileptic seizures, Topiramate (Topamax) - is an anticonvulsant used with other medicines to control certain types of seizures, Phenytoin (Dilantin) - used for treating tonic-clonic (grand mal) and partial seizures. It is also used to prevent and treat seizures that may occur during or after brain or nervous system surgery. Dilantin is an anticonvulsant. It works in the brain to block the spread of seizure activity.
