The gastrointestinal tract usually functions unnoticed, intruding into consciousness only in the form of specific sensations of hunger, intestinal motion, or the need to defecate. However, it is subject to a wide array of pathologic states.
All diseases that pertain to the gastrointestinal tract are labelled as digestive diseases. This includes diseases of the esophagus, stomach, first, second and third part of the duodenum, jejunum, ileum, the ileo-cecal complex, large intestine (ascending, transverse and descending colon) sigmoid colon and rectum.

Cholera; Colorectal cancer; Diverticulitis; Enteric duplication cyst; Gastroenteritis, also known as "stomach flu"; an inflammation of the stomach and intestines; Giardiasis; Inflammatory bowel disease (including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis); Irritable bowel syndrome; Pancreatitis; Peptic ulcer disease; Appendicitis.
Gastrointestinal drugs treat irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) in women who have chronic constipation, nausea and vomiting, treat Parkinson"s Disease, Ulcers, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, treatment of certain bacteria or amoebas.
