The company improves access to healthcare and delivers the medicines; services and education to people around the world by customizing its programmers to the communities they serve. This includes adapting the pricing and looking for ways to minimize the costs without compromising the quality and overcoming other barriers to healthcare. To offer affordable prices, it carefully chooses its partners in the emerging markets to cut the costs and represent the values of AstraZeneca without compromises to the quality of medications and treatment. It has special programs for different regions. For instance, currently there are active Young Health Program for adolescents in the Middle East, Healthy Heart Africa focused on prevention of heart diseases, and Healthy Lung Asia focused on asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and lung cancer in 9 Asian regions.
A special program by AstraZeneca allows people with serious or life-threatening diseases who have tried all existing and approved therapeutic options without any results but are not eligible to take part in the company’s clinical trials to have early access to an AstraZeneca investigational medicinal product.
Although the major revenue to the company is brought by medicines created for wide-spread diseases, it still conducts research and develops so-called orphan drugs, i.e. the medicines designed specifically to treat a rare medical condition (an orphan disease). One of such conditions for which the company had launched the medication is mesothelioma, a type of cancer that develops from the thin layer of tissue that covers many of the internal organs and is mostly associated with the inhalation of asbestos.
