The headquarters of the company are located in Basel, Switzerland. Over the years, the company has become one of the best in the development, production, and supply of generics.
A brief history of Sandoz
The path of Sandoz started in 1886, when two chemists established a chemical company Kern Sandoz in Basel, Switzerland. Mostly, the enterprise was engaged in industrial dyes manufacturing but by 1895 it also made and started to market its first medicinal substance, antipyretic called Antipyrine. In the same year, Alfred Kern died and the enterprise was transformed into a joint-stock company. In 1899, the company began making and selling the sugar substitute. The following pharmaceutical research and production continued under Arthur Stoll, who was the founder of Sandoz's pharmaceutical department in 1917. In 1918, Arthur Stoll isolated ergotamine from ergot; the substance was then marketed since 1921 as a remedy for a migraine and headaches.
Besides medications, the company also manufactured and marketed chemicals for textiles, paper, and leather. In 1939, Sandoz also began producing agricultural chemicals.
At the same time, the pharmaceutical research and development department of the company was very active. It contributed to the science with the discovery of psychedelic effects lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD). The substance was then marketed for around 17 years from 1947 to the mid-1960s as a medication to treat mental disorders known then such as alcoholism and sexual disorders.
The company established its first foreign subsidiaries in 1964. From 1967 to 1995, the company expanded its sphere of operation by purchasing smaller specialty enterprises. In 1995, Sandoz separated its specialty chemicals business to form a company Clariant.
From the year 1996, the company makes part of the large Swiss pharmaceutical concern Novartis made by the merger of Sandoz with Ciba-Geigy, a pharmaceutical company founded in 1970 as a result of the merger of two smaller pharmaceutical companies. The experience in the production and manufacturing of pharmaceutical products of all companies through the merger of which Novartis was created accounts more than 250 years.
The company has a rich scientific heritage that is marked with significant medical innovations: the first penicillin for oral use development in 1951; first biosimilars registered in the U.S. and Europe; novel drug delivery systems such as an award-winning AirFluSal ® Forspiro inhaler.
